Last week, with profound sadness yet also a sense of hope, the decision was made to close Trinity Church, due to financial unsustainability. This news lands with particular pain for many of us here at Christ Church. For forty years, Christ Church has engaged in partnership with Trinity, sharing in ministry together here in Detroit in many different ways–for a number of years, even sharing clergy and administration. In light of this, and as a way to open a new chapter in our continuing story, as Trinity closes, its missioner–the Rev. Anthony Estes, a dynamic preacher and gifted minister and, delightfully, already a familiar face here at Christ Church–has been reassigned as our new full-time Associate Rector, beginning at the end of April.
It is with great joy and excitement that I welcome Anthony’s ministry among us. I also know that this joy is borne out of deep sorrow at the closing of Trinity Church. Among the many needs for prayer in these next days and week, please remember Anthony, all of the members and friends of Trinity, and all who grieve this closure. Consider how we might walk alongside and offer support as fully as ever in this transition. And prepare to welcome Anthony and those who may follow him from Trinity to Christ Church with your characteristically vibrant love and hospitality.
Below is a letter with more information. You also may read Anthony’s letter to Trinity and Bishop Perry’s notice to our diocesan leaders. These letters were sent to your homes this weekend, too.
