From Rev. Emily’s column the week of December 7th:

In last Sunday’s sermon, I referenced Senator Cory Booker’s famous observations that “real hope is the active conviction that despair will never have the last word” and that “hope can always be found working,” which he said in a recent talk at Washington National Cathedral, among many other speeches and writings.

Since I heard excerpts from this talk on a podcast (Crossroads at Washington National Cathedral), and since podcasts by faithful, creative people sustain me daily in hope, offering plenty of words so that despair might never have the last one, I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you here.

  • And Also With You, a podcast on reclaiming an ancient Christian faith for modern Christian life with the Rev. Lizzie McManus-Dail and the Rev. Laura Di Panfilo, bursts with candor, joy, and depth. The recent series on motherhood is especially profound–and timely for Advent!
  • Queer Theology is the longest running podcast for and by LGBTQ Christians and other seekers and people of faith. Hosts Fr. Shannon TL Kearns and Brian G. Murphy share insights and tools for building a thriving spiritual life on one’s own terms. Their new Queering Advent series with related writings & discussion is powerful and practical.
  • For People with Bishop Rob Wright of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta is lively, encouraging, and always insightful. I’ve quoted Bishop Wright’s comments in several sermons!
  • From the Poustinia: A Daily Prayer Podcast with the Rev. Nathan LeRud offers a short morning prayer service (but you can listen any time of day) and incredible scriptural insights. What’s a poustinia? I didn’t know either–it’s a small cabin or room for quiet prayer!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).
