Music Ministries

A philosopher once said, “Life without music would be a mistake.”

Committed to excellence, diversity, tradition, and innovation, the Christ Church Choir, Handbell Choir, and Youth Choir are integral to our worship at Christ Church Detroit. Approximately fifty people participate, singing, and playing a repertoire that includes classical and early music, spirituals, and newly commissioned works.

Our choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists take part in sixty worship services and separate rehearsals per year. The Choir musically leads the 10:30 am worship every Sunday in the months of the choral season, September to June, with choir rehearsals normally taking place on Sunday mornings before worship, starting at 9 am. During the choral season, the Youth Choir rehearses on most Sundays from 9:15-9:30am in the church (directly before Sunday School), and the Handbell Choir rehearses on most Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30pm.

Christ Church Detroit is also involved in the musical culture of our city, hosting concerts and partnering with other organizations and festivals.

We know that musical excellence opens the doors of the church to many, and the parish is grateful for each person’s commitment to the choirs. We consider it a sacred trust to lead this ministry into greater grace and hospitality, and we hope our music provides a glimpse of our Creator every time music sounds within our walls.

If you are interested in joining the choir or handbell group, or both, please don’t hesitate to contact the Director of Music, Dr. Edward Maki-Schramm. For information about the Youth Choir, please contact Youth Choir Director Katrina Van Maanen.
