Musings from Richard Thomas, floral iconographer, for the 2nd Sunday of Advent:

“The woods and every fragrant tree”
Simplicity
A wild soul cries out to me
Humility
Prepare, a way for noble tree
Specifically
And in the darkness light I see
Luminous city

We’re starting the second week of Advent and preparations are in earnest. There is no purity of season in the world outside, and no one worries about trying to restrain Christmas from taking over Advent. The action of preparation is the same as getting there with concerts, decorations, parties and greetings in full play. We’re having our cake and eating it too, and enjoying it all! This is living and loving life for many who are fortunate.

What I like about the restraint in the liturgy and season in the church by contrast is a collective quiet. It’s blue, it’s still advent. We await. Not everyone is fortunate.

The bonsai tree is the relationship and collaboration of two lives. In highly stylized fashion, with studious attending and complete dedication, that plant which appears to be shaped by natural forces and time becomes a poem. Did you ever consider the similarities between the art and practice of creating bonsai and any of the themes of advent?

The greens on the altar invite you to contemplate wild trees, stop and listen to the voices crying out in the wild places. What are you preparing?

The wilderness is the background for the voice that cries out to “prepare the way of the Lord.” It is the prophet’s voice that calls, the one who intuits the shape of things to come. Lives will change and be changed by coming events.

Why is the wilderness significant? Perhaps it is the untamed and chaotic part of nature that strips facades and teaches survival? Perhaps it is the restorative, immersive, elemental nature of wild life that leads to inner truth?

The penitential season of advent allows for retreat from colorful blooms to simpler greens in our floral offerings. We hear the passage read from Isaiah this morning, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord.”
