Worship & Music
Be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God at all times and for everything in the name of Christ.
–Ephesians 5:19-20
Acolytes
Acolytes are primarily older children and teens who assist in worship services by carrying the processional cross, the Gospel book, the torches, the banners, and the festal ribbons. The word “acolyte” comes from the Greek acolytos, which means “companion” or “helper” and has its roots in the Hebrew Bible, where the young prophet Samuel assisted the priest Eli, and Elisha assisted the prophet Elijah. Training is provided throughout the year.
Centering Prayer
These liturgies take place on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m., mostly on Zoom. The hour-long gathering consists of an opening, twenty minutes of silence, prayer, a brief reading, informal sharing, and closing. Participants enjoy the chance to slow down and sit quietly in God’s presence. The group also prays together for the world, personal needs, and any special requests from the prayer box in the church. Anyone is welcome to join at any time.
Lay Eucharistic Ministers
Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs) assist the priest in the preparation and distribution of communion. As needed in a given service, they also often lead the Prayers of the People, serve as Crucifer (carry the processional cross) or as Gospel Server (carry the Gospel book). The clergy and LEM coordinators offer trainings throughout the year, and new LEMs partner with experienced ones.
Altar Guild
Members of the Altar Guild, also called sacristans, set up the altars according to the liturgical season: preparing and maintaining vestments and altar linens, Eucharistic vessels and elements, and silver and brass furnishings. This behind-the-scenes ministry requires no previous experience, no special qualifications, nor special knowledge, except a desire to serve God and our parish. Women, men, and teens are welcome.
Flower Guild
The Floral Guild decorates the church with flowers and greens throughout the year, as the season warrants, including crafting displays for the High Altar, St. Michael’s Altar, the Atrium entrance and even table decorations for Ledyard Hall. Previous experience with flower arranging is helpful but not required, as instruction will be offered as needed.
Lay Eucharistic Visitors
Lay Eucharistic Visitors (LEVs) are lay parishioners who take communion or otherwise visit church members who are homebound or in health facilities. Special training, including the “Safe Church, Safe Communities” curriculum, is offered by our clergy, diocesan leaders, and by other LEVs. It is a deeply important and rewarding ministry.
Audio-Visual Ministry
The Audio-Visual Ministry, or the “Livestream Team”, volunteers their time and skill to livestream and video-record services and special events at the church. Any teens and adults who are curious about this ministry are invited to join! No special knowledge is needed, and all training is provided.
Healing Prayer Ministers
At certain services, we seek to offer healing prayer in the side chapels, so anyone may come forward to request healing prayer in mind, body, and spirit for themselves or for others. The ministry is offered by lay persons who are called to and trained for this important ministry. Training is offered by our clergy and lay ministers.
Lectors
Lectors read the appointed Scriptures aloud during worship. They practice the readings at home, deepening their connection to the Word. It is a great ministry for anyone looking for meaningful participation with a bite-sized, as-needed commitment. Lectors are scheduled according to their availability and the services’ needs.
Ushers
Ushers greet people as they arrive for services, provide hospitality, guide congregants through communion, and collect the offering. If you like to say hello to people, this is a great role for you! Ushers sign up to serve according to their availability and the services’ needs. It’s a great way to “drop in” and assist whenever available.
